Reports

A country report reads like a short annual report: where the market stands now, then where it is heading. It runs 7 to 10 pages, mixes dark and white pages, and cites a source under each chart.

The pages, in order

The cover, the key numbers and the back cover are dark. Pages with charts and tables are white, so they read well on screen and print cleanly.

What a report is for

People open a country report to judge a hiring market. Give them the answer on the first pages and the evidence after it.

Keep the present and the future apart. The first part shows what has been observed, and nothing modeled appears in it. The outlook follows as its own part, with the forecast and its range.

A page of the market now

A page opens with a heading that states the finding and a short paragraph. The chart follows with its source line, and where the exact values matter, a report table sits below it.

A page of the outlook

The outlook shows the forecast as yearly columns with their range, anchored on the last observed year. Running totals above the plot mark the fifth, tenth and fifteenth year. A small table gives the last observed year and those three years.

First work permits in Croatia are forecast to reach 4,200 a year by 2041, 42,000 in all from 2027

The outlook starts from 1,200 first work permits in 2026, the last observed year. By 2041 the forecast reaches 4,200 a year, within a range of 1,050 to 7,350.

Exhibit 4, column chart with a forecast range. First work permits a year, 2026 to 2041, with range. Values run from 1,200 to 4,200. Highest: 4,200 in 2041, 4,000 in 2040 and 3,800 in 2039. Running totals: 9,000 by 2031, 23,000 by 2036 and 42,000 by 2041.Exhibit 4. Dark pages

Dark pages take the ground of the dark theme with white type. They hold a few large figures and no fine detail, so they stay legible when printed.

Words

Count documents, not people: work permits issued, work permits in force, visas issued. One person can hold several permits, so a count of permits is not a count of workers.

Name the source directly beneath each chart and table. Headings state what the reader should take away, and the text gives actual values in place of words like sharply or almost.

Permitted and not permitted

Permitted

  • Open the outlook with its own heading

Readers always know whether a figure was observed or modeled.

  • Cite the source under each exhibit

Publisher and dataset, in one line.

Not permitted

  • Mix forecast values into the market now

A forecast in the first part reads as a fact.

  • Use workers, persons or people as a unit

    Say work permits or visas.

  • Set a chart on a dark page

Data pages are white, so they print as drawn.
